Is it safe to keep using a refrigerator that clicks?
If it clicks occasionally and holds temperature, yes — keep an eye on it. Stop using it and unplug it immediately if you smell burning plastic, see smoke or sparks, or the back panel is hot rather than warm.
How long can food stay safe if the refrigerator stops cooling?
A closed refrigerator holds safe temperatures for roughly four hours. A full freezer holds about 48 hours, a half-full one about 24. Keep the doors shut and move perishables to a cooler with ice if a repair is more than a few hours out.
Can I replace a start relay myself?
We don’t recommend it. The relay sits next to the compressor terminals, and a weak compressor will burn through a new relay quickly — so swapping the part without testing often means paying twice. Testing tells you which of the two actually failed.
Why does the clicking get worse at night?
It usually doesn’t — the house is just quieter. If the sound genuinely intensifies in the evening, a kitchen that warms up during the day is making the compressor work harder, which can expose a marginal relay.
Is a clicking refrigerator worth repairing?
Depends on which part failed. Relay, fan and control repairs are inexpensive and typically buy several more years. A failed compressor on a unit over ten years old is usually the point where replacement makes more sense. A diagnosis tells you which situation you’re in before you commit.
